The current Institute of Acoustics and Sensors "Orso Mario Corbino" (IDASC) of the National Research Council is the heir of the National Institute of Electro-Acoustics (INEA) wanted by prof. Orso Mario Corbino and founded August 10, 1936 by a decree signed by Guglielmo Marconi, then President of the Board.

The headquarters was then in the prestigious Institute of Physics via Panisperna in Rome. Corbino, formerly director of the "Istituto di Fisica", at the time Enrico Fermi was working there, has been the first Director of the Institute

Corbino died only few months later, January 23, 1937, and the Institute was inaugurated after him with an event that took place via Panisperna, April 30, 1939. So in these long years of activity has always wanted to, in his name, celebrate the memory.

With remarkable insight, the institute's research lines were defined address the study of ultrasound, musical acoustics, environmental acoustics and transducer technology, lines still valid and current. Searches that are still part of the cultural heritage dell'IDASC.

In 1949 the Institute was renamed National Institute of Ultracustica (INUA) and the activity continued with studies on the propagation of ultrasound in solids and liquids.

In 1968 he was named Research Institute of Acoustics "O. M. Corbino "(IDAC) and the seat was moved in to the premises of the Headquarters of our yard in the then Institute of Sciences, Piazzale Aldo Moro today.

Later the headquarters were moved to the northern outskirts of the city, at La Giustiniana, along the Via Cassia, at number 1216, where he remained until 1997, the year of the transfer of the CNR Research Area of Rome - Tor Vergata.

In 2002, following the reform of the Authority and the exit of some personnel, the Institute was restructured under the name of CRAS - Former Research Institute of Acoustics "Orso Mario Corbino" (IA).

Finally, in February 2010 took its present name following the opening of the headquarters of Brescia called "SENSOR Laboratory", wanting to emphasize the importance so that the sensor has the Institute's activities.

In physics, acoustics plays a highly interdisciplinary and has implications in many aspects of scientific, technological and social. Although primarily a discipline of classical physics, in fact, it is linked with science and technology, new applications and if required new types of analysis. The acoustics are now applied in fields as diverse as important, for example, in acousto-electronic and acousto-optical processing of electrical signals and / or optical in transducers, the sensors and actuators. It is used in the characterization of new materials, geoacustica in environmental control to minimize the impact on human health in non-destructive testing, technologies for the protection and preservation of cultural heritage.

Many scientific results obtained at the Institute, among these is important to remember the contribution to the development of ultrasound in medicine today has become common diagnostic technique.
